In my work with parents, I often find a theme of confusion on how to respond to their upset child. I also see a theme of dichotomous thinking where you’re either comforting, over-reassuring and overprotective OR you’re non-responsive and aloof. However, the overarching theme is confusion on the “best” way to respond and a desire to help their child develop into an independent and resilient adult. Ultimately, it’s about finding a balance, supporting and helping your child learn to manage their emotions and problems, increasing their sense of confidence, being there for your child and believing that they can handle what comes their way.
