A lot of the people I work with feel that they didn’t learn how to soothe their feelings, express their feelings and have a constructive relationship to their feelings. I find this particularly true when it comes to anger. A theme I’ve also seen is that their feelings are either on or off, and when they’re on they feel out of control and when they’re off they feel safe. There are a lot of reasons that contribute to struggling to regulate and soothe ourselves and mindfulness can be a great tool to help us build our capacity to engage with our emotions in a way can feel both useful and safe.
